This paper is a thematic survey of the history of design.
The paper explores the evolution and change in design perspectives, technology and processes in aspects of design from typography to transport. The role of influence both inside design and from the wider society are considered in relation to how design has evolved over time, particularly from the beginning of the industrial revolution to the beginning of the 21st century.
The development and spread of design styles, and the relationship of design to the societies it has served are considered. The emphasis of the course is on the formal & stylistic evolution of design as signifiers of meaning and how these ideas are expressed visually.
